Beacon Bicycle Commuting in the Snow

Bikeable Beacon will hold its second meeting at 10am on Saturday, January 22nd at Bank Square Coffeehouse. Bike routes and suggested rack locations in town will be reviewed, and planning for a May event will be discussed. Bikeable Beacon is a project from Beacon’s Conservation Advisory Committee, which has the rather unfortunate acronym CAC (how about Network, or Team, or Board, even,) From the website, it was
created to raise awareness of the needs of bicyclists in Beacon. We would also like to encourage bicycling as a mode of transportation in order to reduce traffic congestion along Main Street. And we are planning a community bike ride in honor of National Bike Month in May.
Of course, it’s not exactly springtime here. I think we’ve already mentioned what a cold and snowy winter we are having. It’s been too snowy here in our region for most folksĀ  to even consider riding a bicycle to the train station. But some day, with the right infrastructure and, most important, the right attitudes from all road users, we could see scenes like this in the compact river towns and cities of the Hudson Valley.
