Clearwater Anchored in Beacon

Hudson River Sloop Clearwater will continue renovating its Beacon headquarters at the University Settlement Camp. When an article appeared in the Daily Freeman reporting that Clearwater was trying to buy a restaurant on the Kingston waterfront next to the Maritime Museum, there was speculation online that the organization would be moving operations to that city.

After a call to the group’s Beacon headquarters from THVG, staff member Eileen Newman posted on Beaconcitizen.com, stating that Clearwater was not moving, but looking to expand its presence on the river:

“Clearwater is not going anywhere! We are so happy and grateful to be a part of this wonderful community and to be so near to our founder, Pete, and his family. We have done a ton of work at the former University Settlement Camp, and that work includes a new furnace, a new roof, extensive grounds work, new wiring, and a lot more! With over 400 dedicated volunteers, we were able to make the former White House our new home.”

Newman said the Clearwater would be undergoing winter repairs in Saugherties this year and probably 2012 as well.  She said the organization has a long-term vision for a Clearwater homeport in Kingston, and a partnership with the Hudson River Maritime Museum.
